What are Peptides?

Peptides, including Growth Hormone Secretagogues (GHSs), are short chains of amino acids that serve as the building blocks of proteins. While peptides naturally occur in the body, they can also be sourced from animal or plant proteins such as meat, fish, dairy, eggs, beans, lentils, and whole grains. Manufacturers can isolate these peptides or synthesize them by combining individual amino acids.

The structure of peptides closely resembles certain hormones and signaling molecules that are already present in the body, allowing many peptides to effectively penetrate tissues. These amino acid chains play crucial roles in various physiological processes, including hormone production and DNA synthesis. They are particularly beneficial in muscle tissue development.

What is a GLP-1?

GLP-1s (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) are hormones produced by the gut that play a vital role in regulating blood sugar levels. They enhance insulin secretion, which helps lower blood sugar, while also inhibiting glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar. Additionally, GLP-1s help reduce appetite and energy intake and delay gastric emptying.

Originally developed by Novo Nordisk in 2012, GLP-1 receptor agonists were first approved in 2017 as a treatment for type 2 diabetes and obesity. In June 2021, they received approval for chronic weight management in individuals with obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m²) or overweight (initial BMI ≥ 27 kg/m²) who have at least one weight-related comorbidity.

For further details on GLP-1s and their uses, please refer to trusted medical sources.

What is the difference between GLP-1's?

GLP-1 medications are produced by the gut and play a crucial role in managing blood sugar levels. These medications increase insulin production, which helps lower blood sugar, while also inhibiting hormones that raise blood sugar levels. They are designed to reduce appetite and energy intake, and they delay gastric emptying.

Originally developed in 2012 by Novo Nordisk, GLP-1 medications were approved in 2017 as treatments for type 2 diabetes and obesity. In June 2021, they received approval for chronic weight management in individuals with obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m²) or overweight (initial BMI ≥ 27 kg/m²) who have at least one weight-related condition.

In clinical studies, one GLP-1 medication was found to be non-inferior and even superior to another in terms of the average reduction in glycated hemoglobin levels over a 40-week period (ClinicalTrials.gov number: NCT03987919).
